Established 1796 at Leith by Cockburn family as retail wine merchants serving upper classes. 1815 family, with others, also established a port production and shipping business at Leith and Oporto. 1831 the wine merchant business was divided between Robert and John, the latter forming J Cockburn & Campbell in Edinburgh. 1834 the latter established a London branch. Late 19th century the port business acquired by C&C. 1922 incorporated. In 1973, when until recently still a family led business, acquired by Young & Co's Brewery Ltd. Continues. The port production and shipping business at Oporto also continues in 2013, now in ownership of Symington Family Estates
