Notes:

Traces origins to James Coats, 1774-1857, who made Canton crape from early 19th century and thread from 1820s. The latter business passed to his sons, Peter and James. who traded as J & P Coats. 1845 built the very large Ferguslie Mill. Developed into a major business with a large export trade especially to USA where mills were built. Incorporated 1883 and floated 1890. 1896 amalgamated with other thread businesses, especially Clark & Co Ltd, also of Paisley. Expanded organically and by acquisition in 20th century, especially through takeover of Patons & Baldwins Ltd in early 1960s to form J & P Coats Paton & Baldwin Ltd. Renamed Coats Patons Ltd in 1967. 1986 merged with Vantona Viyella to form Coats Viyella Plc, later Coats Plc. Continuing in 2012
