Traced origins to 1842 when established at Birmingham by William Clayton as a canal carrier business. From 1862 based at Saltley, Birmingham. 1860s diversified into carrying liquid cargoes, especially tar for gas industry. Sometime incorporated as W J Clayton Ltd. 1889 merged with Fellows, Morton & Co to form Fellows, Morton & Clayton Ltd but liquid carrying boats sometime hived off into Thomas Clayton (Oldbury) Ltd. In decline by 1950s and canal operations ended in 1960s although business subsequently carried on by Thomas Clayton (Petroleum Products) Ltd, a road transport operation
