Established in 1876 by Charles Dreyfus, a chemist from Alsace, and others to make aniline dyes from coal tar. Noted for its research and development. Became a leading manufacturer and exporter. Connected with CIBA of Switzerland from 1911 and became a subsidiary. From 1919 J R Geigy SA and Sandoz, both of Switzerland, also had an interest. Made explosives 1914-18 and aircraft fuel additives 1939-45. Established laboratories at Macclesfield. From c1997 known as Ciba Speciality Chemicals. Continues
