Established 1842 by Nathaniel Clayton, b1811, and Joseph Shuttleworth, b1819, as iron founders and engineers. Emerged as a leading maker of portable steam engines especially for use with agricultural machinery, especially threshing machines, which also became important products of the firm. By 1853 world's largest manufacturer of portable steam engines. 1857 established a manufacturing plant at Vienna which came to rival the Lincoln plant in size. Diversified into a wide range of products to become a leading engineering business. Included steam rollers. Made aircraft and munitions, 1914-18, and rolling stock, 1920-29, as Clayton Wagons Ltd. In difficulties in 1920s when business much reduced and sold, inter alia, to Smith's Stamping Works (Coventry) Ltd who re-established the Lincoln works as Smith Clayton Forge Ltd
