Early on operated as Clay Cross Co, a grouping of established engineers and entrepreneurs known to Stephenson. By mid 1840s diversified into iron production. On Stephenson's death largest shareholder was S M Peto. From 1871 owned by Jackson family, led by William Jackson, who retained ownership to 1960s. By 1860s making heavy castings such as pipes, girders, lamp standards, manhole covers, etc. 1940s collieries nationalised. After 1940s largely a foundry business. Public company 1966. Diversified into concrete pipe manufacture 1970s. Established Ashover Light Railway in 1924 to give access to minerals
