Traced origins to Charles Churchill & Co, established in 1865, by Charles Churchill, 1837-y1916, of USA, to import machine tools from USA. 1889 incorporated as Charles Churchill & Co Ltd. 1901 started to manufacture in UK, initially at Salford and from 1904 at Pendleton. This manufacturing business sold to the newly formed Churchill Machine Tool Co Ltd in 1906. Specialised in precision grinding machines. Two companies operated in parallel, Charles Churchill & Co Ltd handling home sales while Associated British Machine Tool Makers Ltd, established 1917, handling exports. Transferred to new factory at Broadheath, Trafford, 1919/20. 1934 separated from Charles Churchill & Co Ltd and thereafter operated independently. 1961 acquired by Birmingham Small Arms Co Ltd to become BSA Churchill Machine Tools Ltd. 1966 merged into a short-lived and unsuccessful joint venture with Alfred Herbert Ltd
