Ralph Allen, c1693-1764, in 1712 was appointed postmaster at Bath where he extended the recently introduced - but on a limited scale - concept of cross-posts. In 1720 he was awarded a substantial, innovative and highly profitable cross posts contract centred on Bath which was extendable to other areas . A promoter, subsequently treasurer, of navigation of Avon from Bath to Bristol and developer of local building stone quarries which had a near monopoly in supply of stone for the rebuilding of Bath [2023]
