Origins of a conduit system at Chester date to 14th century but subsequently decayed. From at least 1600 Chester Corporation granted rights to entrepreneurs to supply water to Chester through extraction from River Dee. John Hopkins of Birmingham and John Hadley of Worcester given these rights in 1692. 1698 conveyed to John Williams and others. 1826 Chester Waterworks Co established. Reconstituted 1857. Subsequently a PLC. Acquired by Dee Valley Group in 1997
