Notes:
Operating in the mid 16th century and formally made a Royal Dockyard in 1567. Emerged as a warship building as well as a refitting yard, building its first ship in 1586. Steadily expanded over years, notably in late 19th century to accommodate the steam navy. Noted for its ropery. Closed 1984
