John Charteris was a former sea captain who was an Edinburgh merchant from the 1670s and by the 1680s had attained much civic prestige. Traded with Baltic and Mediterranean and had a focus on importing wine. In 1690s he was representing at Stockholm Scottish based merchants. By chance, his business accounts survive
