Traced origins to 1853 when established by royal charter as Chartered Bank of India, Australia & China. First branches opened in 1858. By 1890s leading bank in India and second bank in Hong Kong and Shanghai and emerged as a major international bank. 1927 took a major interest in the P&O Banking Corp. 1956 renamed Chartered Bank. Took control of Eastern Bank Ltd, with branches in Middle East, in 1957.1970 merged with Standard Bank Ltd to form Standard Chartered Banking Group Ltd [2023]
