The amalgamation was of long established and wealthy London coal factors of which the Hornes traced origins to 1719. In 1853 they merged with W S Hinton & Son to form Hinton & Horne. In 1903 this firm merged with Locket & Judkins, established 1805, and Gardner, Tomlin & Co Ltd, established 1820, to form Gardner, Locket & Hinton. Charrington dated to 1790 and in 1859 merged with Wright, Sells, Dale & Surtees to form Charrington, Sells, Dale & Co Ltd, known as Charrington, Dale & Co Ltd from 1920. Subsequently acquired numerous other coal merchanting businesses to become the industry leader as coal retailers and wholesalers, including to gas and electricity production businesses. Owned fleet of barges, lighters, etc. Developed a nationally spread business. Sometime known as Charrington Solid Fuels and subsequently merged with British Fuels. Continues as CPL Distribution Ltd
