William Chapman, 1749-1832, was a civil engineer who early on worked in Ireland as agent of Boulton & Watt and later as a consultant in design and construction of canals, bridges, docks, etc. Returned to mainland in 1794 where engaged in land drainage, harbour and canal projects. Also a mechanical engineer, eg had interests in locomotives, coal mining and rope making for which he designed machinery
