Bank of England in 1916 acquired the former premises of St Luke's Hospital for Poor Lunatics, Old Street, London, and converted it to a works for printing banknotes and other security documents. The activity was relocated to new premises at Debden, Loughton, in Essex, from c1953. The works finally closed c1961
