Traced origins to 1831 and formation by act of parliament of Herne Bay Pier Co. Opened with a substantial access road in 1832. Linked to Herne Bay Steam Packet Co which it served. Pier closed 1862 on arrival of railway and business liquidated 1870. 1873 much shorter pier built by Herne Bay Pavilion, Promenade & Pier Co Ltd which in 1890 was renamed Herne Bay Pier Co Ltd. 1899 same company built a larger replacement pier which in 1909 was acquired by Herne Bay Urban District Council
