Ibbetson family were by mid 17th century average north country traders. Within next 100 years emerged as a leading West Riding gentry family on the back of their emergence as wealthy Leeds cloth merchants and clothworkers. James Ibbetson, d1661, was at the heart of this emergence and his five sons developed the family's interests further, marrying in to other West Yorkshire merchant families. They included James, b1673, Joseph and Joshua. The family moved from textile trading into urban property and from there into landed property
