Describes the history and products of the Ring family's clay tobacco pipe making businesses at Bristol using documentary and archaeological evidence; they were two of the most important such businesses in the city. One was established in 1782 by John Ring, d1818, and Frederick Cooksworthy and traded as Ring & Cooksworthy until 1802 when known as John Ring & Co. By 1818 John was also operating a shop selling earthenware. In 1818 his business was sold to William Bissix and in 1819 was sold on. The other business had been established by John's brother, Richard, by 1812. By 1816 he was also a coal merchant. By 1861 was operating as Richard Charles Ring & Co which in 1884 gave up pipemaking to focus on coal selling
