Traced origins to c1817-20 when a cotton mill at Eagley, dating to 1782, was acquired by James, d1830, and Robert Chadwick of Eccles. By 1824 referred to as James Chadwick & Brother, smallware manufacturers. 1830 mill acquired by J & N Phillips of Manchester and Tean but Chadwick name retained. Grew rapidly, especially in 1880s and 90s, turning Eagley into a significant settlement. 1891 incorporated as James Chadwick & Brother Ltd. 1896, when a major sewing thread manufacturer with interests also at Connecticut and Lithuania. Acquired along with other businesses by J & P Coats Ltd. Mills continued in operation until late 20th century
