Traces origins to 1715. Developed as a manufacturing and retailing business. 1795 William Allen joined partnership. Known as Allen & Howard from 1797 and dissolved 1807 when Howard established Howard & Sons. Joined by Hanbury family following William's marriage into that family. From 1870s developed a very large pharmaceutical factory at Bethnal Green, East London. Incorporated 1893. From 1890s developed a large factory at Ware. Acquired by Glaxo Laboratories in 1958.
