Industrial site in Leyton, north Stratford, East London, established as large water mills in medieval times for grain grinding. In 17th century use changed when in c1610s converted by the tenant, Abraham Baker, d1642, to the manufacture of oil from rapeseed and blue starch for cloth washing. On his death leased by John Berisford when converted to gunpowder production until c1650, supplying Parliamentary forces. For rest of century used variously for gunpowder, guns and canon and, from 1691, for grinding woods to produce dyes
