Samuel Clay was son of John Clay, 1713-75, bookseller and stationer at Daventry and elsewhere. In 1770 established at Warwick a bookshop and circulating library. It closed 1772 when he took over with success a grocery and ironmongery business at Rugby, adding bookselling in 1781 and banking in 1797. Retired 1797
