Traced origins to 1783 when John and Charles Baring, merchants of Exeter, sometime partners in the Devonshire Bank and associated with Baring Brothers of London, joined with John J Short to establish a merchanting business. 1788 joined by John Cole when known as Barings, Short & Cole. 1801 reorganised as Charles Baring, Jackson, Gould & Vicary. The Barings withdrew 1808. Closed c1819
