Established around 1800 by Homfray and Birch who were joined in 1801 by the Tappenden family of Tappenden & Co, owners of the Faversham Bank in Kent. Sometime known as Abernant Iron Co. Developed business into a major iron producer and facilitated this by developing expensive tramroad to link with the Neath Canal. By 1804 had diversified into stationary steam engine building and fabricating iron bridges. By 1807 Francis Tappenden was managing the business. It failed in 1814 also causing the collapse of the bank. The works were subsequently managed by the Fothergill family. By 1846 owned by Aberdare Iron Co. Closed in 1875 [2024]
