Margaret Calkin James, 1895-1985, was a graphic designer (noted especially for her posters), textile designer and printmaker. Showed her output at Rainbow Workshops, Bloomsbury, which she opened in 1920. Her customers included London Transport including London Underground, 1928-35, for whom she made poster designs; Jonathan Cape Ltd for whom she produced book jacket designs; Curwen Press Ltd; BBC for whom she designed booklets, etc; and the Post Office. Married to the architect , Charles Holloway James, 1893-1953. She was much influenced by W R Lethaby, founder of the Design & Industries Association
