William Smith, 1769-1839, was a pioneering geologist who earned his living through his other work as a civil engineer. Initially trained as a land surveyor at Stow on the Wold and from 1793-99 was surveyor for the Somersetshire Coal Canal Co. Subsequently worked on drainage and irrigation schemes for owners of landed estates who came to ask his advice on appraising their estates for location of coal resources and extraction, notably Earl of Sefton at Liverpool. Based at Bath, 1790s-1803; at London, 1803-19; and in northern England, 1819-39
