John Mascall, d1705, was a senior public figure at New Romney and in the administration of the Cinque Ports who from c1703 formed a squadron of privateers to operate off the Kent coast, seizing ships engaged in trade with France at the time of the War of the Spanish Succession, 1702-15. Engaged in one privateering expedition to the South Seas, 1703-4, led by William Dampier. Succeeded in privateering by his son
