Traces origins to (Sir) Charles Wakefield, later Viscount, 1859-1941, who in 1899 established a business - C C Wakefield & Co - to market and manufacture lubricating oils for engines. Initially provided lubricants for locomotives and machinery, later for cars and aeroplanes. 1909 introduced the Castrol brand which became a best-seller. Advertised heavily, especially through sponsorship. Between wars developed into a leading international business. 1943 converted to a public company. 1960 changed name from C C Wakefield & Co Ltd to Castrol Ltd. 1966 acquired by Burmah Oil Co Ltd which was subsequently known as Burmah Castrol Plc. 2000 Burmah was acquired by British Petroleum Co Ltd. Continues as a brand
