Traced origins to 1887 and the establishment of Aluminium Co Ltd by a group of leading businessmen and Hamilton Y Castner, 1858-99. This acquired and exploited the latter's patent for making sodium based chemicals as a pioneering means of making aluminium. Soon gave up aluminium to focus on sodium manufacture. From 1885 joined with Solvay & Cie to exploit other patents of Castner and also of Carl Kellner through establishment of Castner Kellner Alkali Co Ltd. In 1900 this joint venture acquired Aluminium Co Ltd and in 1920 was acquired by Brunner Mond & Co Ltd
