Notes:
William Caslon, 1692-1766, established his business in c1716 in City of London and emerged as a leading typefounder and letter engraver. Joined by his son, William, when name changed by 1746 to William Caslon & Son. Passed through successive generations of the Caslon family until their withdrawal in 1874. Then acquired by Thomas W Smith. Incorporated 1900 and about this time opened a new factory at Hackney Wick. c1925 acquired a business in Paris. 1937 in voluntary liquidation when goodwill acquired by Stephenson, Blake & Co Ltd of Sheffield
