Minor, long established gentry family who maintained their position by taking advantage of local industrial development in 18th century. This was achieved by the three sons of John Stanhope, d1743. The eldest, John, 1701-69, trained as a lawyer and was much involved in work for textile industry; the second, Walter, d1759, became a wool merchant; the third, William, was Receiver General of Taxes for the West Riding
