Traced origins to c1754 when Nathan Smith erected a very large factory at Knightsbridge, London, to produce floorcloth by an innovative production process. Burnt down 1794 and rebuilt. From 1824 managed by Smith's son in law, James Barber, when rebuilt. Finally closed 1888
