Frank Caws, 1846-1905, was in independent practice as an architect at Sunderland from 1870, designing a wide range of commercial and other secular buildings. Advocated the use of concrete in buildings. Also had interests in engineering, notably ship hull design for which he patented a testing tank design. Firm continued by his son, Francis, 1885-1951, with William Steel and later known as Caws & Heseltine and F D Caws
