Notes:

William Dunn, 1747-1808, was originally a journeyman grinder and japanner for Francis Fenton and Benjamin Henfrey. Established with others a cutlery and japanning business at Sheffield in which his son, Thomas, became a partner. From 1790s also working as a significant civil engineer and surveyor, notably concerned with canal projects - eg Oakham Canal - but also Wath Forge, Whitehaven, and Dovehouse Colliery in which he had a management role. Also came to act as arbitrator in legal disputes. His Sheffield business continued after his death by his son
