(Sir) John Hawkins, 1532-95, was a shipowner and merchant, initially based at Plymouth and from 1760s largely at London. 1550s engaged in privateering. Worked closely with his brother William. In 1760s noted for the three pioneering adventures made by him with others in slave trading between the Guinea coast and Central America and the West Indies which brought him considerable wealth. Influential in government circles and from 1577 Treasurer of the Navy, later Controller. Leading naval commander during Spanish Armada
