Edward Johnston, 1872-1944, was primarily a teacher of calligraphy and letter design but undertook some work on a commercial basis for printers such as the Dove Press and the Carnach Press but most notably from c1913-1930s for Underground Electric Railways of London Ltd for whom, inter alia, he designed an enduring alphabet, 1916, and its roundel logo, 1917
