(Sir) William Boyd Dawkins, 1837-1929, was a leading academic and museum curator in geology who from the 1870s also took up consultancy work for industry. His most notable achievement was the geological discovery of the Kent Coalfield in the 1890s but he was involved in much else - diamond mining in South Africa, water supply, boring for infrastructure projects including Channel Tunnel. Much employed as expert witness. Played important role in Manchester in linking academic study to industrial application
