Thornhill family, with the related Bache family, had important interests in lead extraction and smelting from Castleton to Cromford and Wirksworth in Derbyshire; coal extraction at Kippax, West Yorkshire and on the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire border; copper extraction in Cheshire; lead extraction in North Wales at Halkin and Mould. Their interests started in the 17th century and continued to 1940 and the closure of Millclose Mine. Principal figures early on were Henry Bache in 18th century and William Bache, 1652-87. In 18th century they included John Thornhill, 1668-1730 and his sons, Bache, 1698-1761, and Henry, 1708-90. Also important was the Twigg family who were connected through marriage and partnerships
