Traced origins in business to John Earle, 1674-1749, son of a Warrington brewer who was at work at Liverpool as a merchant by c1700. Initially specialised in wine but also dealt in other commodities. Business subsequently inherited by his sons and grandsons who sometimes worked together otherwise separately as merchants. Developed as a leading Liverpool family and merchant house. By late 18th century operating in particular as T & W Earle & Co. Traded in particular in mid and late 18th century in beads and slaves and also had interests in privateering
