Traces origins to c1740 when established by John Thompson, 1714-71, at Doncaster as a building business. 1771 business passed to his employee, Thomas Anelay, 1739-98. Much employed by Doncaster Corporation and otherwise built and repaired bridges, weirs, houses, churches, etc. Early on focused especially on brickwork, later stonemasonry. By mid 19th century engaged in local prestige projects, eg Mansion House. Relocated to York in early 20th century when worked closely with architect Walter H Brierley. Incorporated by Anelay family in 1927. From 1920s an increasing focus on conservation, restoration and refurbishment of historic buildings, especially churches and houses, in Yorkshire. Bought by management 2006 and continues in 2016.
