Cooke family operated circuses at cities in Scotland and northern England from late 18th to early 20th century. Traced origins in this business to Thomas Cooke, b1752, and his son, Thomas Taplin Cooke, 1782-1866. The latter's sons and nephew also operated circuses, notably John H Cooke, 1836-1917, Harry W Cooke, 1845-82, and Alfred E G Cooke. In 1876 they formed Cooke Brothers and opened circuses at Manchester initially and later Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Greenock, Dundee, etc. Their partnership ended 1884 when J H Cooke continued at Aberdeen and Greenock and Alfred Cooke at Manchester and Huddersfield. Closed early 20th century
