Traces origins to 1856 when John Harper established at Aberdeen a foundry for making fencing, wire, iron gates, etc. For long known as Harper & Co. Quickly developed into a leading fencing business, installing fences on landed estates, along railway lines, etc, in this benefiting from an 1863 invention of a wire tensioning device. Developed expertise in pioneering design and construction of light foot suspension bridges using wire rope and built over 60 foot bridges at home and in British Empire, 1870-1910, for landed estates, railway companies, etc. Early on also came to specialise in manufacture of power transmission machinery such as gears.1885 business reorganised when John Harper and his son established Harpers Ltd to focus on the foundry business which continued to 1960s. Harper & Co continued the fencing business until c1931. Another son, Louis, also broke away in c1889 to form a civil engineering consultancy to focus on suspension bridges and known as Harper Bridge Co. As a separate venture, in 1899 John and Louis established Harper Motor Co to make motor cars
