Notes:

Traced origins to c1809 as an ironfounding and engineering business owned by John Caird. By 1820s building and installing marine engines and by 1844 building iron ships. From c1852 the business was led by James Tennent Caird, 1816-88, and owned by him from 1863 after which he introduced his sons as partners. For long known as Caird & Co and incorporated as Caird & Co Ltd, shipbuilders and engineers, in 1888. 1916 acquired by Harland & Wolff Ltd although continued as an identifiable unit until 1930s. Engine works sold to John G Kincaird & Co in 1919 [2024]
