Traced origins in business to John Greenwood, 1788-1851, who in 1824 started a local omnibus service between Pendleton and Manchester. By 1850 a substantial business. Developed further by his son, John, 1818-86, who diversified it into omnibus building at Pendleton in 1850s. 1861 pioneered street tramways in Manchester. 1865 played a leading role in merger of business with competitor businesses as Manchester Carriage Co, later Manchester Carriage & Tramways Co Ltd, a very large public transport operator. 1903 the latter acquired by Manchester Corporation when Greenwood businesses reformed as Manchester Carriage Co (1903) Ltd which continued managing cabs, property , etc, to c1970s.
