Traces origins to 1824 when established by John Cadbury, a seller of tea and coffee and, shortly afterwards, chocolate. Developed into a major UK chocolate/confectionery manufacturing business based on Quaker principles. Established factory and workers' village at Bournville from 1879. Under chairmanship of George Cadbury, 1839-1922, whose wife, Dame Elizabeth Cadbury, 1858-1951, was active in welfare and philanthropy especially in relation to Cadbury employees. His son, George Cadbury, junior, 1878-1954, was managing director from 1899 and introduced milk chocolate which became the firm's leading product. Merged with J S Fry & Sons Ltd of Bristol in 1919 to form British Cocoa & Chocolate Co Ltd. Later renamed Cadbury. Other acquisitions included Trebor Bassett. 1989 merged with Schweppes, soft drinks manufacturers, when known as Cadbury Schweppes Plc. Demerged Schweppes into Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc in 2008 when known as Cadbury Plc. 2010 acquired via a hostile bid by Kraft Foods
