Developed a very wide ranging output including general castings, structural metal products including bridges and train sheds (notably for St Pancras Station), rails, locomotives and other fabricated products. Also brickmaking and limestone quarrying. By 1870s largest business in Derbyshire. In 19th century Wright family important in its leadership, especially Francis Beresford Wright, 1806-1873. Incorporated 1888. In early 20th century gave up iron making and evolved as an engineering company with coal extraction and brickmaking interests. Brief joint venture with Air Products of USA in 1950s for construction of industrial gas production plant. In post war years came to focus on brickmaking/building supplies, industrial gases production, and engineering. 1968 acquired by Hanson Group when reorganised to create, inter alia, Butterley Brick Ltd
