Thomas Sopwith, 1838-98, was son of the civil engineer, Thomas Sopwith, senior, 1803-79. Initially worked closely with his father, agent of W B Beaumont, in the North Yorkshire lead extraction industry. Sent to Spain in mid 1860s to exploit lead mining opportunities for his father and Beaumont who in 1864 established Spanish Lead Co Ltd of which Sopwith was manager. This business emerged as a major lead producer in Spain and was reconstructed in 1880 as T Sopwith & Co Ltd. Major smelting works were then built at La Tortilla. c1900 mining ceased and assets sold.
