Traced origins to James Backhouse, 1794-1869, and his brother, Thomas, when they acquired the York nursery of John & George Telford in 1815. Members of the Darlington bank of Jonathan Backhouse & Co. Developed with great success by James Backhouse, 1825-90, and his son, also James. 1853 relocated to 100 acre site at Holgate, York. 1890 reorganised as Backhouse Nurseries (York) Ltd in 1890. Closed 1921. In particular noted for rock garden design, eg at Aysgarth, Leyburn, North Yorkshire
