Traces origins to (Sir) Montague Burton who in c1901 established a clothes retailing business at Chesterfield. Opened branches from 1906 and moved to Leeds in 1910 when also a manufacturer of men's ready to wear and bespoke suits. Developed his cloths factory into the largest in Europe. Incorporated as Montague Burton Ltd in 1917 and floated 1929 when had 333 stores. Subsequently diversified in to women's clothing, gave up manufacturing and acquired other retail chains. 1997 renamed Arcadia Group
