Traced origins to Joseph Burrell, d1831, who established a forge at Thetford in 1770. Subsequently made agricultural equipment including threshing machines from c1805. Under Charles Burrell, 1817-1906, from mid 19th century made steam engines, initially portable ones but subsequently traction engines, steam wagons, etc, for agricultural, road haulage and showmen's use. Also steam rollers. Incorporated 1884. Subsequently formed Burrell's Hiring Co Ltd. 1919 merged into Agricultural & General Engineers Ltd. In decline in 1920s and closed 1928. Operated from St Nicholas Works [2020]
